The NFC patch: an embroidered badge with a chip inside
A standard patch with an embedded NFC chip readable by smartphone. Here's what it really allows, and where the limits are.
What we're talking about
An NFC patch is a standard badge — PVC, woven or embroidered — with a small NFC chip built in. Once held near a compatible smartphone, the chip opens a link: a web page, a video, a contact, a document. It's the same technology as transit cards or contactless payment.
The chip is a thin component, coin-sized or smaller, slipped between the patch layers or into a dedicated pocket. It needs no battery and no maintenance: it draws its power from the phone's field at the moment of reading.
What it allows
The first use is a link to a unit page. A squadron patch that, held near a phone, opens the official page, the unit's history, or a members-only space. Handy for a patch given at a ceremony or exchanged between units.
Second case: the memorial page. For a retirement, a unit's disbandment, a last flight, the chip points to a dedicated page — photos, testimonials, key dates. The patch becomes both an object and a gateway to content that can evolve over time.
Third use, more practical: a link to a contact or a document. A veterans' association handing out a patch linked to its membership form, an event pointing to its programme. The chip can be reprogrammed as long as you keep control of the content.
The limits, to know before ordering
First limit: the content lives elsewhere, not on the patch. The chip only stores a link, not the page itself. If the site behind it disappears, the patch points to nothing. For a memorial page meant to last years, make sure the hosting will hold, or plan a reprogrammable chip.
Second limit: reading. NFC works at near-direct contact, a few centimetres. Some nearby metal surfaces can disrupt the read. And not every user knows how to enable NFC on their phone. It's a bonus, not a universal reflex.
Third limit: durability. A patch worn in the field, washed, rubbed, heated, tests the chip. The integration is done to protect the component, but an NFC badge suits souvenir or collection use better than intensive operational wear.
Fourth point: cost and lead time. Adding a chip raises the unit price and slightly lengthens production, since each piece must be integrated and tested. On small runs, that weighs more proportionally than on a plain patch.
Who it's right for
The NFC patch makes most sense on a limited run with strong symbolic value: a farewell set, a ceremony piece, a commemorative patch. For a routine squadron issue, the standard patch remains the right choice — simpler, tougher, cheaper.
Before committing, ask a simple question: will the link I want to embed still be valid in two years? If yes, the connected patch makes sense. If not, a fine classic patch is the better call.
